Case Study: The Plastiki

Touchcloud’s Green Broadcasting™ Solution Performs Fastest and Cleanest
for David de Rothschild’s Plastiki Adventure

Background

Adventure Ecology is a global online community that learns, acts, shares and speaks on the environment. They are the technology resource for The Plastiki Expedition. Adventurer and environmental storyteller David de Rothschild will embark on an ocean adventure, sailing approximately 10,500 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean. The Plastiki is a 60-foot (20m) catamaran made out of more than 12,000 reclaimed plastic bottles, srPET plastic and recycled waste products.

The Story

Rothschild, a prominent ecologist and descendant of the banking family, will sail across several sites of ecological importance in an attempt to draw attention to the amount of garbage disposed of in our oceans. One of which is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a massive sea of garbage sitting just below the surface of the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii. Starting in San Francisco and ending his journey in Sydney, Australia, this expedition will raise awareness to environmental problems caused by global warming, for instance rising oceans, ocean acidification and ocean pollution.

The Problem

Their website contains numerous videos, 3D effects, maps, images and information. Once the expedition is launched, the site will have to serve over 500,000 visitors per month, 50,000 concurrent viewers of their live webcasts and also streaming numerous archived videos. With this site having a large carbon footprint, it was only fitting to have the site moved from a coal-powered hosting solution to a 100% solar powered data center.

The Solution

The Plastiki Expedition was also able to dramatically improve their global reach and found that site download times and site availability from customers around the world improved significantly when choosing the Green Broadcasting™ Solution. A key component to The Plastiki Expedition's business strategy is to deliver an ocean adventure to raise awareness of the global waste problem via video and web site content to viewers around the world, so global availability and fast global download times is of critical importance to them.

Touchcloud provided the platform for the expedition's Web site and Web applications, along with CDN services for web site content delivery and live video streaming. This consisted of a dedicated server, our Green Content Delivery Network, and Carbon Offsetting. Their solution was customized to be the most sustainable Green Broadcasting Solution to date.

Implementation

Using computer users in the U.S., U.K. and Asia - along with Gomez reports - they tested the sites’ speed. They also tested Touchcloud’s CDN speed against Amazons’ CDN using the same methods of computer users, Pingdom and Gomez reports, and Touchcloud beat out Amazon in the tests.

The Results

Their visitors (which could be up to 100,000 a day) will be able to view the Flash media and video streams three times faster than they were previously. Ten times faster in other areas around the world. On top of that, the site is completely carbon neutral.
