Jay Walker, founder of Priceline.com has been twice named “50 most influential business leaders in the digital age.” This is what he said at TED 2008 regarding the hidden connection and powering our data.

Forward playhead to the 5:45 mark:

TED Conference with Jay Walker

“We think about the Internet, and the information that goes across the Internet, and we never think about the hidden connection. But I brought along a lump of coal. What does a lump of coal have to do with the Internet? You see it takes the energy of one lump of coal to move one megabyte (1MB) of information across the net. So everytime you download a file - each megabyte is a lump of coal, which means a 200 megabyte file looks something like this ladies and gentlemen [Jay displays a large bag of charcoal to the audience]. So the next time you download a gigabyte or two gigabytes, it’s not for free - the connection is the energy it takes to run the web and to make everything we think possible, possible.”
